City roads face massive digging in coming days for CCTV surveillance system project
The project by the Telangana Police to increase CCTV surveillance system
in the city is set to cause untold misery to the commuters by way of
backbreaking rides and traffic chaos.
The CCTV cameras dotting the
city’s skyline invariably need fibre backbone, to provide which, great deal of
road length needs to be dug up in the coming years. Already, a proposal is
reliably learnt to have reached the State government for digging up a total of
940 km of road length, to provide fibre network for 10,000 surveillance cctv cameras in hyderabad.
At a recent event, DGP M. Mahender Reddy had revealed
plans to have a minimum of 10 lakh surveillance cameras
installed across the city within three years, under ‘Nenu Saitham’ project.
The project was proposed for effective surveillance in
the area covered by three police commissionerates including Hyderabad, Cyberabad and
Rachakonda. The cameras will be connected to the command control centre to be
set up in Banjara Hills.
Road cutting permissions have been sought for
providing bandwidth to about 2,000 locations where the cameras would be
installed, but the application is kept pending owing to the moratorium on the
permissions, sources informed.
Telangana Police is not
alone in seeking permissions for road cutting though. Other Telecom and
Internet service providers such Aritel and ACT Fibernet too have their
applications pending with the State government, for laying of underground lines
over 500 km in length.
There is also a pending application for digging up 73
km length between Bolarum and Golconda for a Defence project being taken up
jointly by BSNL and L&T, officials told.
Though the project claims to use trenchless
technology, pits need to be dug up for every 100 metres, they said.
Pipelines project
Looming in the immediate horizon, however, is a
proposal by the Hyderabad Metro Water
Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to dig up the stretches from Prashasan Nagar
to Road No. 10 and to Road No.13 for laying of pipelines. Road cutting
permissions have been accorded, and as per officials estimates, the works will
take 120 days for completion.
Already, the ongoing water works in Malkajgiri and
part of Hitech City have left the roads in pathetic condition, turning them
non-motorable on many stretches. Road cutting permissions are being accorded
only for water works and for electrical infrastructure. The rest had been
temporarily suspended owing to the threat of inundation during monsoons. Orders
lifting the ban are yet to be given.
