Now days CCTV cameras
are the most popular electronic gadget for securing any asset. You can see
everywhere the sign board YOU ARE UNDER CCTV SURVEILLANCE. Many of
shops, hotels, parks, banks, ATMs, malls, residential buildings & all
industrial infrastructures are covered with CCTV cameras.
Is
actually those cameras are achieving their goals?
Before
this question, we have to understand the CCTV system & its role in
security.
CCTV stands for Closed Circuit
Television. An interrelated connectivity of network equipment like cables,
computers, power source, software, cameras and data storage devices with
effective human interface may call as CCTV surveillance system.
Here
are few types of cameras available in market.
1. Dome
Camera- Useful for shops, offices, internal parts of building, houses
2. Box
Camera- Useful for gates, entry/exit points
3. PTZ
Camera- For wide area coverage (Required another supporting camera for better
coverage)
4. Bullet
Camera- For stores, less illuminated places
5. Fish
Eye Camera- For canteen, malls, and function halls
These
types can also divide in sub-types like IP camera, Movement sensor, Thermal
sensor, Sound sensor, Infrared & many more.
Before
start installation of CCTV
camera or cameras firstly we have to study on our requirements
(vulnerability of asset), surrounding crime ratio (Threat) and terrain (scope
for cameras).
In
view of our requirement, selection of right cameras is also important part of
installation. Many time observed that we asks vendor for suggesting the camera
type. It’s good but before that be ready with our homework & notes.
Consider the brand name, pixel, zooming capacity, toughness of camera also
arrange sufficient illumination for better visuals.
Next
part is installation; cover the maximum area by cross view if possible. Means,
before finishing one camera view, next camera should be available for relating
the incidence.
Camera
should be placed at least second floor level height to avoid damage by
burglars, hide network & power cables. Try to cover all entry/exit points.
Appropriate
data storage is also major part of installation. You have to decide hard disk
or server capacity for record keeping footage. You can avoid excess recording
by placing movement sensor cameras.
Don’t
get relaxed after installation. Monitoring, backup of important footage &
maintenance is also very important for better results.
Hope
these basics will help you for best returns of your investment in electronic
surveillance.
