PUNE STATION PLUGS ILLEGAL ENTRANCES TO
ENHANCE SECURITY
New vehicle,
baggage scanners also on cards
The Pune railway station is upgrading its security system by plugging around seven or eight unauthorised entry points that put the railway premises and passengers at risk from intruders. The illegal entry points have been a major nuisance headache for the station from a security point of view, given that it is among the most sensitive locations in the city.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) will also get a vehicle scanner which will help to secure cars that enter the station to pick up and drop passengers. The RPF is also in process of getting three more baggage scanners at the station — presently, it has only one which is installed at the main entrance.
Divisional railway manager BK Dadabhoy spoke about the new security measures on Friday during an event where city Member of Parliament Anil Shirole inaugurated a newly constructed entrance ramp at the main gate of the railway station.
“The work of closing up the entrances which may cause security trouble will soon start. Even if I am transferred in the meantime (as his tenure is about to end), I will apprise my successor about its need so that the work continues unimpeded,” said Dadabhoy.
In December 2016, the Indian Railways had identified 202 stations across the country for implementation of the Integrated Security Systems (ISS) project, under which they would get baggage scanners, vehicle scanners and CCTV camera surveillance, among other things.
Meanwhile, the new ramp and entry gate inaugurated on Friday is aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the busy area. Mirror had earlier reported about the snarls due to this ramp, as it provided the perfect halting space for the public.
Taking cognisance of this, the railway administration created four lanes over this ramp by putting up iron rods. The earlier entrance is closed for vehicles now and pedestrians can use the new gate.
“The gate will help to smoothen the entry of vehicles into the station. We have also shifted an auto rickshaw stand from the premises, while a new parking area has also opened up for commuters,” added Dadabhoy.
